Videotape Assignment #3: Process/Procedure Report
In your third presentation, you will be explaining a process to your classmates. Choose a process in or related to your field or major which you think your classmates will not know, but will be able to understand. Your purpose is to explain how something happens, or how something is done. Below are some examples of topics:
-How the Grand Canyon was formed
-How icicles are formed
-How a political leader is chosen in your country
-How to find a prime number
-How a certain muscle moves
-How a seed germinates
For this presentation, you will need to prepare and use some visual aid to help your classmates follow the steps in your explanation of the process. In some cases, the blackboard will be appropriate. However, in most cases, it will be more efficient and easier to follow if you prepare some type of display (a diagram or graph, for example) or bring in an object to illustrate (a model or a simple piece of equipment, for example).
Plan to speak for 5 minutes, and to answer questions from your classmates. Make sure you have an introduction and a statement of your topic and purpose, and that you clearly signal the end or conclusion of your presentation. Your process should be divided into clear steps or stages, and include specific information explaining each step. Make sure you use transitions to guide your audience through the process.
Consider the skills we've been working on: hesitating techniques, rephrasing and giving examples. Vary your pitch, volume and speed to emphasize key ideas, including transitions and major steps. Make sure you speak slowly enough and loudly enough to be understood. Make eye contact with your audience.
Above all, relax and enjoy yourself.
