Videotape Assignment #2: Your field of study
-
Unit II
-
1. Introduction:
-
Think about how you would introduce your area of study to a class of U.S.
undergraduates, e.g. on the first day of an introductory class. You may
want to provide a general definition of your field of study and present
basic subfields. If you have chosen a specialty you may want to introduce
it briefly.
-
2. Application:
-
Think about when and how you would use your specialization.
-
Why is it interesting or relevant to the students' lives?
-
How does your specialization relate or apply to other disciplines?
-
What types of problems do you solve and how do you go about problem solving?
-
Provide examples of how your field of study would impact on the lives of
the students.
-
3. Interview:
-
Check with an experienced teacher in your department, or with a U.S. undergraduate
in a different field, to make sure that your presentation is interesting,
relevant to OSU students, and easy to understand.
-
OR
-
Define a basic term in your field of study. Make sure that American undergraduates
unfamiliar to this field would be able to understand the information you
provide. Your presentation should be well organized and should include
meaningful examples wherever possible.
-
This presentation will be videotaped. It should last between 5 and 7 minutes.
Make sure you have an introduction, a statement of your objective. (Today
I'd like to discuss my field of study, Geodetic Science.), specific facts
and details, and a conclusion. Use transitions to help your audience follow
your organization. Also make sure you know how to pronounce key terms in
your field.
-
Remember to make eye contact and to speak slowly and loudly. In addition,
in this presentation, you should attend to posture, movement, and gestures.
