English language coursework for students in academic programs
     International teaching associates

Non-native speakers who wish to be graduate teaching associates must demonstrate adequate oral English proficiency. A score of 60 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or a minimum score of 230 on the locally-administered SPEAK is required before students can become certified to teach. Prospective teaching associates who do not meet this criterion are placed in coursework until their communication skills are adequate.

Exemption criteria for international teaching associates are different from those for the English composition requirement. Please contact the Spoken English Program for information.
