Summer 2008

The Graduate Preparation Program is an intensive summer course for students who have already been admitted for graduate study at Ohio State or another university and who wish to further improve their English and related academic skills before they begin their graduate program.

Program dates: June 16 – August 15. You should arrive in Columbus no later than June 13. (Please Note: Early termination is possible to accommodate graduate school start dates)

Curriculum: 18 hours of instruction weekly. Emphasis on developing strong speaking and listening skills that will help prepare you for success in your graduate study. Advanced reading and writing and general academic skills are also highlighted. Small classes (8-12 students) permit interaction and communicative language learning.

Visa status: You will be sent an I-20 to obtain a student (F-1) visa for your summer study in the American Language Program.

Tuition and fees: $5,158, plus required health insurance of $432. See budget for Graduate Preparation Program student.

Housing: You will be eligible to live in a university dormitory. Off-campus housing are also available.

Eligibility: Admission is limited to students who have been admitted to graduate or professional programs at Ohio State University or another U.S. university. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (213 on the computer-based exam, or 79 on the iBT) is required. Students with a TOEFL score below this minimum may be admitted to the Graduate Preparation Program if participation in the program is required as a condition for admission to a graduate program at The Ohio State University.

Curriculum

The Graduate Preparation Program curriculum is designed to prepare you for graduate-level study by focusing on the linguistic and academic skills essential for success in an academic curriculum. Class size is kept small (8-12 students). The curriculum includes work in listening and speaking, reading and writing, and academic skills.

Listening and Speaking

Housing Options

University Dormitories

ALP students can live in one of the University's 24 dormitories, which offer a number of options, ranging from single rooms to suites of rooms with up to eight students. All dormitory rooms have telephones, free cable television and internet connections, refrigerators, and microwave ovens. Students can eat in the University dining halls. Dormitories are popular and fill up quickly. It is important to apply in advance. Be sure you indicate on the ALP application that you want a dormitory application sent to you.

Off-Campus Housing

The ALP housing coordinator can help you find off-campus housing when you arrive in Columbus. In addition, the Office of Off-Campus Student Services can provide help in finding a place to live. For information, see the Off-Campus Housing website.

Private Dormitories

The following private dormitories are furnished and are located directly across the street from the university: Harrison House, Riverwatch Tower, and Ohio Stater Student Housing

How to Apply

In order to apply, you will need to submit the following:

1. A completed and signed application form.
2. Proof of the financial capability. You will need to complete the Statement of Financial Responsibility (third page of the application form) and submit a bank statement showing sufficient funds for one quarter ($8,928). If the funds are in someone else’s name, that person will need to complete and sign the “financial sponsor” section of the form.
3. A $50 application fee.
4. A photocopy of picture page of your passport.

If you have not been admitted to an Ohio State graduate or professional program, also submit:

1. A copy of your letter of admission for graduate school at another university.
2. A statement of degree from your undergraduate university.

Budget for the American Language Program Student

Applicants to the Graduate Preparation Program must have adequate funds to support their study in ALP for the Summer 2008.

Health insurance is required by Ohio State University policy. Students are automatically included in the Student Health Insurance Program and the premium of $432 is added to student fees each quarter

Please note: Students must purchase the University health insurance unless they have insurance coverage from a sponsoring government embassy or from a major international organization, or they are covered with U.S.-based insurance as a U.S.-based employee or a dependent of a U.S.-based employee. Travel insurance or any insurance purchased in home country will not satisfy the University requirement.

The Statement of Financial Responsibility on the application form should show sufficient funds to support all living and educational costs for one quarter of study. Applicants who bring their spouse or children must show additional financial support: $1583 each quarter for a spouse; $791 for each child 13 years or older. Additional health insurance costs for a spouse are $827 per quarter; for a child or children $844; for spouse and children $1,290.
